CES Hi-Res Pavilion

Producer/Engineer Dave O’Donnel and I were interviewed by Mike Mettler at the HI-Res Pavillion at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Universal, Sony, Warners and several manufacturers were here demonstrating how much better Hi Res can sound. I’m happy to be part of this movement towards higher quality audio. Mike Mettler has a good write-up of what this was all about here. I was especially impressed by the sound in the Lincoln that was parked at the booth!

AES 2016 Platinum Engineering Panel

In October 2016 was at at the Audio Engineering Society convention in Los Angeles on the “Platinum Engineers” panel, moderated by Michael Romanowsi, with Chuck Ainlay, Lynne Earls, Bob Ohllson and Andrew Scheps (who isn’t actually as big as he looks in this photo!). We took questions from the audience and told some “war stories”. It was a lot of fun!
One thing that became very apparent was that we were all lucky to come up through the apprentice system. There was a real advantage to starting at the bottom and seeing so many others producers at work. There a lot of way to make good records, and a lot of ways to make bad ones too! A lot of questions were less technical and more about how to work with artists to get the best out of them. This is such an important discussion because in the end that’s what producing is all about: focusing on the emotion in the song, respecting it, and bringing it out in the most direct way possible!

Tom Holman at the Mix Sound For Film

I spent a day at the Mix Sound For Film event at Sony Studios. I’ve mixed music for more than a few long-form rock concert videos, so it’s always good to check in and see what’s going on in the world of sound for film. This year the buzz is about “3D” audio systems like Dolby Atmos and Auro 3D. It’s great in the theater and it’s now available for your home! (More channels = more fun!) I want to mix music for this format, so everyone go out and buy a system for their TV please!
It seemed fitting that with all the immersive playback systems being demo’d I ran into legendary surround sound pioneer and the man behind Lucasfilm’s THX system: Tom Holman.

DEG Hi-Res Music Symposium at Capitol Studios

I was on the “Meet The Hi-Res Music Creators” panel for a select group of music industry folks at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Maureen Droney moderated and I was on the panel with Bruce Botnik (Pono) Eric Boulanger (The Mastering Lab) and John Jackson (Sony). This was a great event, and I even got to meet and have lunch with music business legend Jac Holzman!
